Obverse description Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Justinian I facing right, rendered in the late antique style typical of early Byzantine coinage. The emperor's effigy displays a pearl diadem and layered drapery over the cuirass, with the folds of the paludamentum visible at the shoulder. The portrait is executed in relatively low relief consistent with hammered copper fractional coinage of the Thessalonica mint. The encircling legend reads D N IVSTINIANVS P P AVG in Latin capitals, identifying the emperor as Our Lord Justinian, Perpetual Augustus. The flan is irregular in shape, as is characteristic of hand-struck Byzantine bronze issues of this period.

Reverse description The reverse displays the denomination numeral IS (representing 16 nummi) composed of a large I and smaller S, with the letter A to the left and P to the right of the central numeral. Above the numeral appears the officina mark A ☩ Δ, incorporating a cross between the alpha and delta workshop designators. The mint signature TϵS, abbreviating Thessalonica, appears in the exergue below. The field is flat and unadorned aside from these identifying marks, consistent with Byzantine fractional bronze issues of the reign of Justinian I.
