Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Boyacá — the engagement on August 7, 1819, where Bolívar's forces decisively broke Spanish colonial control over Nueva Granada — this piece was produced by the Banco de la República as part of a broader commemorative program that included silver and smaller gold denominations. The 1969 series represented one of the most ambitious numismatic undertakings in Colombian history to that point.
At 64.50 grams of .900 gold, production numbers were tightly constrained by bullion costs, keeping mintages low relative to the commemorative issues Colombia had previously released.
