Costa Rica's 1983 gold commemorative program drew on pre-Columbian goldworking traditions — the Diquís and Chiriquí cultures of the southern highlands produced some of the most technically sophisticated lost-wax castings in the ancient Americas, and the Banco Central held significant archaeological pieces in its collection that informed this series. The .500 fineness was a deliberate economic compromise, keeping production costs manageable during a period when Costa Rica was navigating severe external debt and IMF structural adjustment conditions.
