Beschrijving voorzijde The national coat of arms of Costa Rica occupies the central field, depicting three volcanic peaks rising above a coastal scene with a sailing vessel, framed by an ornate cartouche with scrollwork. Seven stars arc above the shield, representing the seven provinces, while two ribbons bear the legends 'REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA' and 'AMERICA CENTRAL'. The peripheral legend 'REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA - AMERICA CENTRAL' runs along the upper rim, with the date '1983' prominently displayed at the bottom, flanked by the engravers' initials 'B.G.' and 'G.R.'

Aanvullende informatie

Costa Rica's 1983 gold commemorative program drew on pre-Columbian goldworking traditions — the Diquís and Chiriquí cultures of the southern highlands produced some of the most technically sophisticated lost-wax castings in the ancient Americas, and the Banco Central held significant archaeological pieces in its collection that informed this series. The .500 fineness was a deliberate economic compromise, keeping production costs manageable during a period when Costa Rica was navigating severe external debt and IMF structural adjustment conditions.
