| Reverse description | A large, finely modelled right-facing portrait bust of Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac dominates the field, rendered in high relief with sculptural, textured detail evoking a stone or bronze effigy. The cardinal is depicted wearing a skullcap, with his vestments visible at the truncation. The engraver's initials KH appear at lower left of the portrait. Stepinac was arrested by Tito's government in 1946 and convicted of collaboration and war crimes in a trial widely condemned in the West as a show trial. He served five years in Lepoglava prison before being released to house arrest in Krašić, where he remained until his death in 1960. The Vatican made him a cardinal while he was still imprisoned — an act of deliberate defiance toward Belgrade.
John Paul II beatified him in Marija Bistrica in 1998, the same year this coin was issued.
