The Sea Otter platinum issue belongs to Canada's Platinum Maple Leaf bullion program, launched in 1988 — the first platinum bullion coin series produced by any national mint. The $150 face value corresponds to the fractional half-ounce tier, which saw considerably lower mintage than the full-ounce $300 pieces throughout the program's run. Sea otter-reverse years are among the harder dates to locate in this denomination.
