The Red Kangaroo bullion series launched in 1989 as a direct challenge to the South African Krugerrand's dominance in the fractional gold market. Perth Mint's decision to use .9999 fine gold rather than the Krugerrand's .9167 gave it a meaningful purity advantage and opened access to markets — particularly in Asia — where .999 or better was a purchasing requirement. The $15 face value denomination corresponds to one-tenth of an ounce, priced at a modest premium over spot to attract retail investors alongside collectors.
Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II replaced Arnold Machin's third in 1998, making the 1994–1995 issues among the final years carrying the Machin obverse in this series.
