Sede Vacante coins were struck by cathedral chapters during a vacancy between bishops — the brief interregnum when the chapter itself held temporal authority over the diocese. Brixen's 1779 vacancy followed the death of Joseph Philipp von Spaur, who had held the see since 1747. These issues were not merely ceremonial; they served as a concrete assertion of the chapter's autonomous governing rights at a moment when Habsburg pressure on ecclesiastical independence was intensifying under Joseph II.
The 1½ Thaler denomination is an awkward multiple that appears rarely outside German ecclesiastical minting, typically produced more for presentation than commerce.
