Mahmud I — known as Mahmud Begada — ruled Gujarat for over fifty years, one of the longest reigns of any Indian sultan. His administration oversaw the consolidation of Gujarati naval power and prolonged conflict with the Portuguese, who were simultaneously establishing footholds along the western coast. Fractional copper issues of this type circulated in the port economies of Surat and Cambay, where small-denomination coinage saw genuinely heavy use in daily market transactions.
The Nasir title appearing in the coin's name reflects Mahmud Begada's honorific styling as "Helper of the Faith."
