Reverse description A globe centered on the Pacific Ocean occupies the central field, rendered in relief to highlight the geographic contours of the region. To the right of the globe, the denomination '1000 YEN' is inscribed in Latin characters, accompanied by the year date '2012'. Surrounding legends in Latin script identify the event as the 2012 Tokyo Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group, while the Japanese era date '平成24年' appears in the lower field in Kanji script.

Additional information

Issued to commemorate the IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings held in Tokyo in October 2012 — the first time Japan had hosted the event since 1964. That 1964 meeting came just weeks after the Tokyo Olympics, a deliberate pairing meant to signal Japan's postwar economic rehabilitation. The 2012 return came at a considerably grimmer moment: Japan was managing the fiscal and humanitarian fallout of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake while the global economy was still absorbing the aftershocks of the 2008 financial crisis.

Mintage was capped at 50,000 pieces.
