| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Uganda occupies the central field, featuring a traditional Kob antelope and a grey crowned crane as supporters flanking a shield adorned with a sun motif, with a scroll bearing the national motto below. The legend BANK OF UGANDA arcs along the upper periphery, with the denomination 1000 SHILLINGS inscribed in the lower field. The date is split across both sides of the shield, with 19 at left and 97 at right. The design is rendered in high relief with a beaded border encircling the entire obverse. |

Uganda's mid-1990s commemorative program produced a series of celebrity and sports-themed issues clearly aimed at the collector market rather than domestic circulation — this Schumacher piece appeared during his consecutive championship years with Ferrari's predecessor Benetton, when he won back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995. The coins were never intended to pass through Kampala market stalls.
Struck across two calendar years under a single issue authorization, the 1996–1997 dating reflects production runs split across the mint's scheduling rather than any reissue decision.
