Obverse description Central field features the crowned Portuguese royal shield, displaying the five quinas (escutcheons) arranged in cross formation with castles in the border quarters, surmounted by a royal crown with a small cross at apex. The mint mark 'A' (for Angra) appears to the left of the shield. A circular beaded inner border frames the design, with the Latin legend arranged around the periphery reading the royal titles of António I.
