Additional information

San Marino issued this coin in the same year West Germany and East Germany both staged major commemorations marking the 300th anniversary of Bach's birth — an odd position for a microstate with no particular connection to the composer. San Marino's ongoing silver commemorative program throughout the 1980s was largely export-driven, aimed at collector markets rather than domestic circulation, and most examples were sold directly through the San Marino mint to foreign dealers and philatelic agencies.
