Issued to mark Carl XVI Gustaf and Silvia's Silver Wedding Anniversary — seventeen years after their 1976 marriage, which itself had been the first Swedish royal wedding broadcast on national television. The Riksbank authorized a limited gold commemorative rather than a circulating issue, making this one of the few Swedish gold pieces of the modern era intended purely for the collector market.
KM#884 is occasionally confused with the larger gold issues of the same anniversary series. At 5.8 g it sits at the lighter end of Swedish commemorative gold production from this decade.
