| 表面の説明 | The obverse of this Austro-Hungarian 1000 Kronen note, originally dated Wien 2 Jänner 1902, carries a bold red letterpress overprint reading DEUTSCHÖSTERREICH applied centrally at the top to validate it for circulation in the new Republic of German-Austria. To the left, a double-headed imperial eagle vignette is flanked by multilingual denomination inscriptions in Czech, Polish, Ukrainian, Italian, Slovenian, Croatian, Serbian, and Romanian within a ruled panel, while to the right an oval portrait vignette presents a young woman in traditional dress with a floral headdress, rendered in fine intaglio against an elaborate blue guilloche border with rosette corner ornaments. Three facsimile signatures appear below the central text block, identified by the printed designations GENERALRAT, GOUVERNEUR, and GENERALSEKRETÄR. |

This note belongs to a peculiar transitional moment: the Oesterreichisch-ungarische Bank continued issuing notes after the Austro-Hungarian Empire had already ceased to exist. The empire collapsed in November 1918, yet the common central bank kept operating into 1919, producing currency for successor states that were simultaneously stamping older issues to assert monetary independence. Austria, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and others each perforated or overprinted circulating Austro-Hungarian notes with national stamps — this first 1000 Kronen issue emerged directly into that chaotic environment.
Unstamped examples were legally valid in some territories and worthless in others, depending entirely on where and when they crossed a border.
