Equatorial Guinea's central bank has issued a long series of small-format gold pieces nominally tied to the CFA franc zone, though the country left the CFA franc system entirely in 1985 when it adopted the Central African CFA franc under BEAC. Fernão do Pó is the Portuguese name for Bioko Island, named for the explorer who reached it around 1472 — well before Spanish colonization made it the administrative heart of what became Spanish Guinea.
