Emirates NBD was formed in 2007 through the merger of Emirates Bank International and National Bank of Dubai — at the time, the largest banking merger in the Middle East. This 2013 issue commemorates the institution rather than a regnal or national anniversary, placing it in the narrow category of UAE coins struck explicitly to honor a commercial entity operating under state ownership. The Central Bank of the UAE has issued relatively few gold pieces of this denomination, and most were produced in modest quantities aimed squarely at the collector and gift market rather than any monetary function.
