Obverse description Central design features a stylized map of the Central American isthmus surrounded by ocean waves, with a prominent rayed sun bearing a human face rising above a range of mountains in the upper portion of the field. The legend INDEPENDENCIA DE CENTROAMERICA · 1821 15 DE SETIEMBRE 1971 curves along the upper and right periphery, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Central American independence. The denomination 1000 COLONES appears in large numerals and letters across the lower field. The coin is struck to a proof-like standard with fine detail throughout, and the entire design is bordered by a raised beaded rim.

Reverse description The reverse is entirely blank, presenting a plain, unadorned field consistent with its classification as a reverse trial strike. The surface shows the gold-plated brass substrate without any design elements, legends, or devices. A raised rim borders the otherwise featureless disk.
