Series 5 was issued under the Wartime Administration as Japan effectively controlled Thai financial policy following the December 1941 forced transit agreement. The 1000 Baht denomination was enormous relative to average wages — a deliberate high-value instrument intended for large commercial transfers, not retail circulation, at a moment when ordinary purchasing power was collapsing under wartime inflation.
Rama VIII, Ananda Mahidol, was a minor studying in Switzerland when this note was issued in his name. He never returned to Thailand during the war years, making his royal imprimatur on high-denomination wartime paper a curious formality.
