Part of the Japan Mint's commemorative program for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, this piece was issued alongside dozens of similar 100-yen sport-themed coins — an unusually broad series that generated significant collector demand domestically while seeing almost no circulation abroad. The program ultimately spanned over 50 designs across multiple denominations.
