Somalia's elephant bullion series, launched in the early 2000s, occupies an unusual position in the silver bullion market: the coins are legal tender of a state that, at the time of issue, had no functioning central government. The Transitional Federal Government, recognized internationally but controlling almost none of Somali territory in 2008, nominally authorized these pieces — which were in practice produced for the European collector and stacking market, not Mogadishu.
The actual minting was handled by the Bavarian State Mint in Munich under licensing arrangements. KM#204 is the 2008 iteration of an annually updated design, giving the series a de facto bullion program structure despite its nominal African issuer.
