100 Schilling Kremsmünster Monastery

Austria's 100 Schilling commemorative series, launched in 1974, was one of the first national programs to systematically issue silver commemoratives at face value — a deliberate policy to stimulate public interest in coinage during a period when silver had largely disappeared from everyday circulation. Kremsmünster Abbey, founded in 777 AD by the Bavarian Duke Tassilo III, was chosen for the 1977 issue; the monastery houses one of the oldest continuously operating astronomical observatories in Central Europe, established in 1748.

The .640 silver fineness was fixed across the entire series, a compromise driven by metal costs rather than tradition.
