The commemorative dates '777' and '1977' flank the chalice at the upper portion of the design, denoting the founding year of the monastery and the anniversary year respectively. The inscription '1200 JAHRE STIFT KREMSMÜNSTER' appears in the field, with a portion rendered in uncial script evoking the medieval character of the foundation. Austria's 100 Schilling commemorative series, launched in 1974, was one of the first national programs to systematically issue silver commemoratives at face value — a deliberate policy to stimulate public interest in coinage during a period when silver had largely disappeared from everyday circulation. Kremsmünster Abbey, founded in 777 AD by the Bavarian Duke Tassilo III, was chosen for the 1977 issue; the monastery houses one of the oldest continuously operating astronomical observatories in Central Europe, established in 1748.
The .640 silver fineness was fixed across the entire series, a compromise driven by metal costs rather than tradition.
