Transnistria — the narrow strip of land between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border — declared independence from Moldova in 1990 but remains unrecognized by any UN member state. The Transnistrian Republican Bank nonetheless operates a full numismatic program, issuing collector coinage denominated in a currency accepted nowhere outside its own borders.
