The "100 Rijksscholen" tokens were issued in 1983 to commemorate the centenary of Belgium's state secondary school network — the rijksscholen — established under the 1879 education law pushed through by the liberal Frère-Orban government. That law, which stripped clerical influence from state-funded education and required secular instruction, triggered the so-called School War (Schoolstrijd) and briefly ruptured diplomatic relations with the Vatican. The tension it generated shaped Belgian confessional politics for the better part of a century.
The Herzele piece is one of a municipal series, each struck for a specific school's local centennial celebration.
