Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of Jersey from German occupation on 9 May 1945, a date still observed as a public holiday on the island. The occupation had lasted five years — longer than any other part of the British Isles — and included forced deportations of Jewish residents and the construction of fortifications using slave labor brought from across occupied Europe.
KM#96 is one of several denominations in the 1995 commemorative series, with the gold issues targeted squarely at the collector market rather than circulation.
