Opmerkingen

The Banco Emissor do Norte was one of several regional issuing banks created almost overnight following Brazil's sweeping banking reform of 1888–1890, when the newly proclaimed Republic dismantled the Banco do Brasil's monopoly and authorized a rush of provincial institutions to issue their own currency. The experiment was short-lived and chaotic — the period is remembered in Brazilian monetary history as the "Encilhamento," a speculative bubble of extraordinary violence that collapsed in the early 1890s, wiping out many of these banks entirely.

The ABNC plate work on this series is typically accomplished, though the bank itself had little time to establish any meaningful circulation before the crisis overtook it.
