Additional information

Etterbeek's "Maelbeker" tokens belong to a wave of municipal good-for pieces issued by Brussels communes in the early 1980s, typically redeemable at local festivals or markets tied to folkloric traditions. The maelbeker itself — a communal drinking cup passed among participants at civic gatherings — reaches back to medieval guild culture in the Low Countries, and several Brussels communes revived the concept as both a ceremonial prop and a funding mechanism for local celebrations.

The patinated bronze finish on this issue was deliberate, distinguishing ceremonial strikes from any plated or raw variants in the same series. GMJ catalogues at least two die states for the 1983 Etterbeek emission.
