Banca del Friuli issued this emergency scrip following the catastrophic Friuli earthquakes of May and September 1976, which killed nearly a thousand people and left hundreds of thousands homeless across the Udine and Pordenone provinces. With the regional economy in shock and coins vanishing from circulation almost immediately, several local Friulian banks produced low-denomination paper tokens under emergency authorization to keep basic commerce functioning. This note is a direct artifact of that crisis period.
The 1976–1977 dating reflects the span of active use before normal coinage supply recovered. These issues were never legal tender in the strict sense and were redeemed and largely destroyed once the emergency passed — survivorship is accordingly limited.
