Issued to mark the centenary of Carol I's birth, this coin appeared in 1939 — the same year Romania was navigating precarious neutrality as Europe moved toward war, and just one year before Carol II would be forced to abdicate under pressure from the Iron Guard and German diplomatic coercion. The timing gave the issue an unintentional valedictory quality for the Romanian monarchy itself.
Struck at 32.5 grams in .900 gold, production was limited and the coins saw virtually no circulation. Most surviving examples retain full mint luster precisely because they functioned as prestige objects from the outset.
