Angola's first post-independence banknote series was rushed into production almost immediately after the MPLA government declared independence in November 1975. Thomas De La Rue delivered these notes while the civil war between MPLA, UNITA, and FNLA was still actively contested in the field — Cuban troops were fighting alongside government forces when this issue reached circulation.
The Banco Nacional de Angola had been reconstituted from the colonial Banco de Angola just months before, and the institution was issuing currency for a state whose territorial control remained genuinely uncertain at the time of printing.
