Obverse description The obverse reproduces the design of a historical Four Excelentes gold coin of the Catholic Monarchs, minted at the Segovia mint. The central field features the facing busts of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, conjoined and crowned, rendered in a Gothic heraldic style faithful to the original late 15th-century coinage. The legend FERNANDVS : ET : D : G : REX : ET : REGIN : encircles the busts in Latin script, referencing the monarchs by the grace of God. The inscription ESPAÑA and the date 2016 also appear within the legend, identifying the issuing state and year.
