Obverse description The obverse features three parish churches of the Merchtem municipality arranged across the field: to the upper left, the Gothic-spired Parish Church of St. John the Baptist (Ossel); to the upper right, the Romanesque-tower Parish Church of St. Stephen (Brussegem); and at the lower centre, the modest Parish Church of Saint Gudula (Hamme), each depicted in detailed architectural relief surrounded by trees. The date legend '1 sept. '89' arcs along the upper rim in blackletter script, commemorating the issue date of 1 September 1989.
