Andreas Jakob von Dietrichstein served as Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg from 1747 until his death the same year — one of the shortest episcopates in the see's history. This 100-ducat piece was almost certainly struck as a presentation issue to mark his elevation, a common practice among the prince-archbishops whose secular authority over Salzburg made such extravagant gold multiples both politically useful and personally prestigious.
The Salzburg mint had a long tradition of producing large-denomination gold multiples for diplomatic gift-giving rather than circulation. At over 350 grams of near-fine gold, this piece was never intended to pass through a merchant's hands.
