The 2008 Rat issue marks the return of the cycle's first sign — the same position it held when the series was in its early runs — making 2008 pieces a bookend of sorts for collectors tracking full cycles. The Monetary Authority has consistently used .9999 fine gold for these issues, a purity standard that was still relatively uncommon in sovereign bullion coinage when the series launched.
