| Additional information |
Issued within weeks of Diana's death in August 1997, this piece is one of dozens of commemorative gold coins flooded onto the market by Liberia during the 1990s — a period when the country's nominal coinage program functioned almost entirely as a revenue-generating operation for foreign minting companies, with no meaningful circulation intended. Liberia had been in civil war since 1989; these coins were produced for collectors in Western markets, not for any domestic monetary purpose.
KM#473 was struck by the Pobjoy Mint on contract.
