The background field features a repeating starburst motif in gold relief, and Tezuka's signature appears in the lower right. The legend OSAMU TEZUKA Debut 60th arcs along the upper rim, with the denomination $100 and the copyright notice ©Tezuka Productions inscribed in the lower field. |

Osamu Tezuka, who died in 1989, never saw his work commemorated in gold by a Pacific island nation — but Tuvalu's bullion and commemorative program, administered largely through licensing arrangements with overseas distributors, made exactly that possible. The coin belongs to a wave of early 2000s issues capitalizing on the global boom in themed numismatic gold, timed to coincide with growing Western collector interest in manga and anime as legitimate cultural exports.
Tezuka's estate has been notably active in licensing. His "God of Manga" designation was formalized posthumously by the Japanese comics industry.
