Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the George IV State Diadem, with a pearl drop earring and pearl necklace visible, after the third definitive portrait modelled by Raphael Maklouf. The legend QUEEN ELIZABETH II arcs along the upper periphery, while 100 DOLLARS TUVALU and the date 2006 are inscribed along the lower and right periphery respectively, all within a raised border. The finely detailed portrait shows the Queen's characteristic coiffure and draped neckline against a mirror-polished field.

Reverse description A full-colour applied image of a red 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray coupe is depicted in three-quarter front view, centrally positioned over a radiating sunburst pattern of alternating raised and recessed rays that converge toward the lower field. The legend CORVETTE STING RAY arcs along the upper periphery, followed by the trademark notation TM GM to the right, with the engraver's initials WR visible in the right field. The date 1963 appears in the lower exergue in bold Roman characters. The polished gold ground contrasts with the vivid colour-printed automotive motif, lending the design a dramatic presentation.

Additional information

Tuvalu's numismatic program has long been operated through the Perth Mint under licensing arrangements that allow the island nation — with a population under 12,000 and no mint of its own — to issue legal tender coins almost entirely for the collector market. This piece commemorates the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray, the first year of the C2 generation, whose split rear window coupe body was designed under Larry Shinoda and approved by Bill Mitchell over GM's styling divisions in a process that took the better part of three years.

The split window lasted exactly one model year before Zora Arkus-Duntov had it removed for obstructing rear visibility.
