Space Invaders, developed by Tomohiro Nishikado and released by Taito in 1978, was the game that effectively launched the golden age of arcade gaming — and, famously, caused a temporary coin shortage in Japan as players drained 100-yen pieces faster than the mint could replenish them. Cook Islands has been issuing licensed pop-culture bullion and numismatic pieces for decades, operating under arrangements that make its royal mint relationship largely nominal; the islands' coinage program is administered almost entirely through external distributors targeting collector markets rather than domestic circulation.
