Sharjah held the title of Islamic Cultural Capital in 2014, a designation conferred by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation — not to be confused with the separate UNESCO Creative City designation the emirate also carries. The OIC rotates the title annually among member states' cities, and Sharjah's selection reflected the emirate's unusually deliberate investment in museums, manuscript preservation, and Arabic-language publishing under Ruler Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, himself a published historian.
The 60mm format places this among the larger commemorative strikes in UAE coinage, a scale reserved for issues the government treats as display pieces rather than circulation adjacents. KM#114 is one of relatively few UAE silver commemoratives struck in this diameter.
