Metodija Andonov-Čento served as the first president of the Anti-Fascist Assembly for the National Liberation of Macedonia (ASNOM), which declared Macedonian statehood on August 2, 1944 — Saint Elijah's Day, a date chosen deliberately for its symbolic weight in Macedonian national consciousness. He was later arrested by Yugoslav authorities in 1946, convicted on fabricated charges of collaboration, and died under house arrest in 1957, his role in founding the state systematically suppressed for decades. This coin is part of North Macedonia's broader commemorative gold program issued around the time of the country's rebranding and constitutional consolidation in the early 2000s.
