Oscar Arias had not yet won the Nobel Peace Prize when this coin was issued — that came in October 1987, the same year as the strike, awarded for his Central American peace plan that helped end a series of regional civil wars. It is unusual for a sitting head of state to be depicted on circulating coinage of their own country while still in office, and Costa Rica's decision to do so reflected the extraordinary political moment rather than any numismatic tradition.
