| Obverse description | The obverse displays the national coat of arms of Costa Rica at centre, featuring three volcanoes rising above a valley with a sailing ship in the foreground, all enclosed within an ornate shield. Above the shield, a rising sun is flanked by seven stars representing the seven provinces, surmounted by a scroll inscribed AMERICA CENTRAL. Two laurel branches frame the shield on either side, and a ribbon below bears the legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA.
