Petit-Rechain is a small municipality in the Liège province, and this piece belongs to the broader Belgian bons de nécessité tradition — locally issued token coinage produced to address chronic small-change shortages that persisted in parts of rural Belgium well into the 1980s. The "Balaine" denomination is purely local convention, with no fixed exchange parity to the Belgian franc enforced beyond the issuing community.
The patinated bronze finish was applied deliberately at striking, distinguishing these from circulated wear.
