Averbode Abbey, a Norbertine (Premonstratensian) foundation in the Belgian province of Antwerp, has issued its own token coinage for internal use — accepted at abbey shops and facilities — continuing a tradition of ecclesiastical monetary autonomy that stretches back centuries in the Low Countries. The "Abdyen" denomination is specific to this system, not convertible outside abbey grounds.
