Souphanouvong — known as the "Red Prince" for both his royal lineage and communist convictions — was a French-trained civil engineer who became the founding president of the Lao PDR in 1975 after decades leading the Pathet Lao movement. His alliance with the Viet Minh and later Hanoi made him deeply controversial among Western-aligned governments of the period, though within Laos his status was effectively unassailable until his death in 1995.
This commemorative was issued fourteen years after his death, part of a broader Bank of the Lao PDR program producing high-denomination silver pieces largely aimed at the collector export market rather than domestic circulation.
