Lutosławski spent much of the Stalinist period in Poland writing deliberately uncommercial work — café piano music, arrangements, pieces that drew no ideological attention. His serious compositional voice, suppressed throughout the early 1950s, re-emerged only after the post-1956 thaw. This coin was issued to mark the centenary of his birth in 1913.
The NBP's collector series honoring Polish composers has been issued in .925 silver since the early 2000s, with Lutosławski joining Penderecki and Szymanowski in a sequence tied loosely to significant birth or death anniversaries.
