The RA expeditions were Thor Heyerdahl's attempts to prove that ancient Egyptians could have crossed the Atlantic using papyrus reed boats — RA I sank in 1969 before completing the crossing, and RA II succeeded in 1970, reaching Barbados from Morocco in 57 days. Heyerdahl's crew was deliberately multinational, a Cold War statement as much as an archaeological one.
Samoa's connection to the voyages is commemorative rather than geographic. Tanumafili II reigned as Head of State from 1963 until his death in 2007, the longest-serving such figure in Samoan history.
