Part of the Bank of Russia's ongoing "Cities of Military Glory" series, Omsk received this designation in 2015 in recognition of its role as a major industrial and supply hub during the Second World War — home to evacuated factories from western Russia that produced tanks and ammunition throughout the conflict. The city also served briefly as the capital of the anti-Bolshevik Provisional All-Russian Government under Admiral Kolchak from 1918 to 1919.
