Part of the long-running Russian Geographical Series launched in 2000, this Moscow Region issue is one of dozens of regional bimetallic 10-rouble coins struck in enormous quantities for general circulation. The series was conceived as a low-cost alternative to silver commemoratives — bimetallic technology allowed the Central Bank to produce collectible-adjacent coins at near-standard production costs while technically keeping them in active circulation.
Moscow Oblast surrounds but does not include the federal city of Moscow itself, a jurisdictional quirk formalized in Soviet administrative geography that the Russian Federation retained.
